Book Club Reads

What will Book Club read this year? Will it be The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner? The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo? Mockingjay? Want to have a say? Keep an eye on the Daily Bulletin for the details of our meetings.
We are currently reading Hate List, by Jennifer Brown.
All readers welcome!

Book trailers

So the new hip thing for book publishers is to create a book trailer. Much like a movie trailer will try to entice viewers, the book trailers are meant to spark interest, tantalize, and sell copies of books. Some of them are great and some are dull but they are very similar to music videos. Go to youtube and type in book trailers so see some examples

Haiti

With the recent earthquake in Haiti and the international outpouring of relief efforts it is somewhat shocking that many Americans know very little about a nation that is one of our closest neighbors. The following books might shed some insight into a country that has been thrust into the international spotlight:

Brother I'm Dying by Edwidge Danticat. A powerful family saga/memoir about growing up in Haiti and emigrating to America.

All Souls' Rising by Madison Smart Bell. A critically acclaimed novel of historical fiction about the slave uprising that brought independence to Haiti.

Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World by Tracy Kidder. A nonfiction work that details one doctor's struggles to stop the spread of infectious disease and to combat the dangerous effects of poverty in Haiti.

Book Fair 2009

Thanks to all the donors who generously gave to the McCulloch Library during our annual book fair. The library's collection was greatly enhanced and now we all get to benefit from our new purchases. Come and check out the new books and Dvd's that are now available. If you are a fan of Masterpiece Theater and Jane Austen adaptations, the library now has a large selection of these films on the shelves.
